Now what?

We've seen the films, we've read the books, we've heard the panel discussions--now what do we do to put our ideas and commitments into action?

Post your ideas here.

In the meantime, here's more information about Darwin's Nightmare, including an interview with director Hubert Sauper:

Darwin's Nightmare: Thursday, April 20

The final screening of the Alan Hankin Environmental Film Series will be Thursday, April 20, in Walker 210. EarthEmerson is holding a panel discussion on global warming at 7:00 p.m., and the film will follow, probably around 8:30 p.m.

Darwin's Nightmare is a documentary about Africa, about the West, about globalization, about fish, about weapons, about the poor, about the World bank . . . in short, about the interrelatedness of the natural and human realms. But Hubert Sauper's film--a sort of anti-Pale Male-- reveals the hellish side of these entwined relationships.

An excellent, but troubling documentary, nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary feature.

Information on Instinct, playing at Media Services on April 19

Instinct is the feature film version of Alan's often-assigned text, Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn. It stars Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr. in the roles of a deranged anthropologist and a brillant psychiatrist, pitted against each other in a battle for truth. Is the movie true to the book? If you've read the novel, feel free to weigh in after you see the film.

The film will be shown at 10:00 , 12:30, 3:00, 5:30, and 8:00 p.m. in Media Services, 3rd floor Ansin Building.

Info on Pale Male

Alan's film series will be opening with a showing of Pale Male. We felt it was an excellent way to kick off the series because it gives an example of nature co-existing with people, in a way that enriches both. The DVD will be added to the Library Media Center's permanent collection, so if you do miss this showing, you'll be able to see it there. But don't miss it! Michele Goldsmith, Alan's colleague and friends, will be introducing the film, and Alan's tribute film will also be shown--and it is not to be missed!
